1. Description of the Thermal oil heater system
- Thermal oil heater is a heat carrier (thermal oil) heating plant comprised of a heater, circulation pump, expansion tank, storage tank, deaerator, piping and a control panel.
- Thermal oil heater is usually of the tube coil type. It can be heated electrically or fired by oil fuel or gas to raise temperature of the thermal oil.
- Thermal oil which circulates through the system is firstly raised to a temperature of about 300 degree C in the heater. The heated fluid is then circulated through the system and the heat energy is transferred to the heat consuming devices. The heat energy of the thermal oil is then utilized for heating purposes. A temperature drop of approximately 40 degree C in the consumers is usually anticipated. After the heat has been absorbed, the thermal oil is returned to the heater by means of a circulating pump.
- An expansion tank is provided in the system to take up expansion of the thermal oil when it is heated. A deaerator is sometimes installed for removing air in the system. A storage tank, having a capacity sufficient to contain all the oil in the system, is also installed. In case of any emergency or repairs, the entire contents in the system can be emptied into this storage tank.
2. Advantages of the thermal oil system:
- Thermal oil systems provide an efficient source for processes that require temperatures as high as 400 ° C.
- Operational costs are usually less expensive than steam systems and usually require less maintenance.
- The thermal oil boiler system has a higher thermal efficiency and does not lose heat into the atmosphere through steam traps and leaks like in a steam system.
- The important thing to keep costs down is that the thermal oil boiler has a very simple design and operation.
- The thermal oil system is safer than the steam system because it operates under low pressure (just the pressure of the pump to overcome the thermal oil circulation resistance in the system).
- Static recording thermal oil furnaces that burn firewood, lump coal ... have the lowest investment costs among thermal oil furnaces with simple operation.
